Hawa Mahal: A Monument Of Jaipur

Culture Of India - North India

The Hawa Mahal is a monument that has remained a part of Indian history. Its location in Jaipur’s city center has made it a prominent tourist attraction.

The history of the Hawa Mahal dates back to Rajput Maharaja Jai Singh of Alwar. During the time of Emperor Akbar, the monument was used as a palace for the Rajputs. In 1559, Jaipur gifted the Hawa Mahal to a widow by a royal decree. This is the reason for the Hawa Mahal’s statue to be inscribed with the words “My Country – India”.

In the early part of the twentieth century, the Hawa Mahal was constructed by the Jaipur Development Corporation, through the assistance of the South Eastern Industrial Infrastructure Development Agency (SEIDA). According to this agency, the construction cost of the Hawa Mahal was less than one crore rupees.

Hawa Mahal:

The palace of Jaipur was destroyed during the Battle of Panipat when Jai Singh was defeated by the Mughals. However, the main building of the palace remained intact and was restored to its original condition. It was then purchased by the Sir G.N.M. Roy and Robert Clive Companies.

The new restoration project began in 2020. Many monuments and buildings were being rebuilt in an attempt to revive the architectural features of the city.

The new Hawa Mahal has a black granite facade and is surrounded by the main court. The structure has three columns that support the roof and a colorful garden with fountains and exotic plants. A large Kundan-wallah is seated on the raised platform and has a very colorful banyan tree which gives it a majestic appearance. The building also has a tower beside the statue of Lord Jagannath and depicts the traditional Indian motif of sitting in a garden. This tower is also said to be one of the oldest and best examples of architectural engineering.

Know More:

The monument of Jaipur was built according to the traditional designs of the Rajputs to honor the Rajputs who have built it and to serve as a reminder to all the descendants that the tomb of the Maratha king Jai Singh is still standing. The two columns have been replaced by the figure of Lord Jagannath and the garden is where he was born.

The most amazing feature of the Hawa Mahal is that the legend of Lord Jagannath is attributed to the monument of Jaipur. This is because it was built so that all descendants could see the presence of their ancestors in their lives. On top of the building is a statue of Lord Jagannath, which speaks volumes about the gratitude towards one’s ancestors.

In the early days, the body of Lord Jagannath was found in the garden of the Hawa Mahal and this monument was named after him. The family of the Roys has also claimed that this was the original site where Jai Singh was born. Therefore, the present city of Jaipur claims to be the site where the monument of Jaipur was first built.

Final Thoughts:

The monument of Jaipur is beautiful because of its diverse architectural features. All its features are the result of meticulous planning and effort. The Hawa Mahal is always open for visitors and many of them have visited it to pay homage to the legend of Lord Jagannath.
